I’ve been wondering lately about the pattern of familial domestic abuse versus syndicated crime and whether what we’re seeing is more in line with the former. My guess is that there are similarities, but some differences. These senators who on the surface seem to have nothing to lose by voting against Blanche and jeopardize their legacy and sense-of-self by voting for his confirmation are responding/reacting to something. The thing about domestic abuse is that the people in the circles just outside of the immediate threat don’t do anything to stop it. They’re close enough to know what’s happening but also part of the system in such a way that they lose by saying something (ostracized, ousted, publicly humiliated by the abuser) and lose less by not saying something (maybe they’ll be seen as the one who stood up to the abuser, but when does that happen?).
That pattern looks more like domestic abuse than mob boss mentality. MAGA and GOP make up the social circle of these senators and other players. I just keep getting the impression that it’s not the threats on their lives or the loss of the prospect of lobbying job that is influencing their votes but the threat of being ostracized. They receive serious threats whichever way they vote and they have enough money that they don’t need another job.
Elections are run by states so far but Trump has appealed the stay on his voting executive order to SCOTUS. His appeal was supported by many red states and asked SCOTUS to remove the stay. Given that the EO Federalizes different aspects of the upcoming mid-term elections, not just mail in voting and given the vast discretion SCOTUS has in deciding whether and when to take a case, the fact that SCOTUS has taken the appeal is worrisome. People keep turning to the November elections but what will be the rules under which they operate and how much deleterious confusion will SCOTUS have spread beforehand? Do you think SCOTUS will advance Trump's power once again?
James Carville is extending the rage rhetoric to threatening Trump that, once back in power, Democrats are "going to go after your stupid jackass kids and their spouses." This type of hateful rhetoric is thrilling for rage addicts today...
..This is the same person who previously threatened that “collaborators” with Trump may be treated in the same way as they were after World War II. It is fueling the unrequited rage of the left with promises of unrestrained revenge and retaliation.
Lisa - Cornyn's comments left the public sick and nauseated. Like Tillis and others, they are simply in fear of MAGA loyalists threatening physical violence and really describes Texas politics: Crenshaw, Paxton, Abbott, Cruz, and Cornyn. Essentially they are advocating Blanch as the president's personal attorney.
THEIR LEGACY HAS BEEN BAKED IN - COWARDS EVERY ONE OF THEM.
BTW - great show with Karen last Wednesday! You are our 'go to' person for SCOTUS. I fear the Shadow docket on issues he is taking to SCOTUS for the next several months. Like Congress, they have no moral standing.
Lisa, I wonder what you think of retired federal judge Mark Wolf’s opinion that Trump violated a federal statute by asking for IRS immunity, and that Blanche is a co-conspirator in that crime. Makes sense to me.
