If we're going to get out of this mess, and we can and we will, we must be willing to state clearly and explicitly that we have allowed barbarians to seize power in our country. That is the essential and necessary first step for us to assert the that America belongs to the People above all else.

The barbarians are not merely at the gates. The barbarians -- people who do not share our liberal democratic (small d) culture -- have taken over the federal government, presidency, congress and supreme court. The ultra rich have found their demogogue, Trump, to dupe racist, misogynistic, xenophobic white nationalists into voting against their economic interests in order to give vent to their bigotry.

The seemingly coordinated bullying of Elizabeth Oyer by Missouri's twin senators highlighted a major fault with the way Congressional committees are conducted. In her case she was continually interrupted from giving any answer at all - not because she was evasive or untruthful. Her unflappable demeanor and honesty (much like in the case of Jack Smith) demonstrated that she was far superior in intellect, ethics, and integrity than either of her questioners (or should I say attackers).
We have seen too much misconduct in these hearings that is overly tolerated by the chairs. For instance, witnesses rambling with non-responsive answers on after yes-no questions as a crude tactic to use up the questioner's time. Or questioners interrupting to avoid hearing truthful answers. What we need is a re-examination of how to control questioners and witnesses- much like what a judge does in a courtroom. The first step would be a set of guides for committee chairs, and appropriate orientation for them.
I have written to the senator from my state who is on the Judiciary Committee and asked him to explain how he will vote on Blanche and why. No response yet.

We are in “The Dark Ages” of U S democracy. Even in the Civil War, both sides wanted a democracy, just 2 separate democracies with their own individual presidents and representatives. Democracy was not going away regardless of the outcome.
